The inn was built in 1636 from reclaimed shipping timbers meaning some parts of the construction could be over 1000-years-old. Located on Watling Street, the building has been used as a coachman's inn and stop-over for travellers for nearly four centuries. During that time it has seen a number of grisly deaths. Eerie encounters suggest not all of its guests have checked out. The apparition of a Roundhead soldier has been seen in the gents toilets and the spirits of two children, perhaps brother and sister, have been seen playing in a hallway. It is reported guests have fled the pub rather than spend the night after encountering strange noises, smashing glasses and even the uttering of an invisible voice. A few years back they was doing so building work on the building and found a highman outfit they had carbon date and it about 300-400 years old . I live about 2 miles way from the inn .
